Many businesses or brands will use video marketing for advertising their goods or services, and these videos can serve many different purposes.
In fact, a 2022 article published by Entrepreneur found that around 60% of businesses that reported using video marketing saw these videos helping them reach their brand awareness goals as well as increasing engagement.
Each time you sit down to create a video project, there are at least three different stages of video production that you should cycle through to make the best video possible.
The following three stages are the most important stages of video production that you should keep in mind to create the most successful videos.
Video Production Stages
Development and Preproduction
During this stage, the seed of an idea is planted, and all of the minute details are laid out. The development stage is the time to make lists and notes and figure things out, including the costs.
A key point in this stage of development is asking some hard-hitting questions about what it is you are producing the video for. These questions should include variations on the following questions:
- What message do I want to say to the audience, and why do I want to say it?
- Who is my audience?
- What do we want the audience to do after watching this video?
- Where will my story take place?
- When does the video need to be finished/distributed?
During preproduction, the theoretical ideas turn into concrete ones. The questions that came up in the development stage need to be answered here, and everyone on the production team needs to be on the same page. This is also the stage where the script is written, and often rewritten and edited to create the final version.
After the final script has been signed off, a script containing cues and a shot list is created.
Sound, lighting, costumes, hair, and makeup all need to be established during this stage, even though some of these elements won’t be fine tunned until postproduction and final editing. The actors audition and sign on to the project during this stage.
Production
This stage is where the shooting begins. During the production stage, the actors, director, videographers, and many other important individuals gather to begin getting the videos shot.
Using the shooting script, scenes are usually shot out of order and then placed in the correct sequence during postproduction.
Production can be a lengthy process, whether you’re shooting in a closed studio or out somewhere on location. This is easily the most exciting part of video production.
Postproduction
During post production, all the final elements come together. Postproduction is where the sound and light elements are integrated, and the video itself is edited together in the correct sequence and colorized.
Postproduction is also a lengthy process with edits going back and forth. But once the video is officially completed, everyone involved lets out a huge sigh of relief.
After the video is complete, it’s time to advertise and distribute. Depending on your target audience, there are many platforms and ways to get your video out there.
